This week marks the kick-off of the True Star Media Institute summer session where 65 young people between the ages of 16 and 24 are learning about podcasting, photography and video production. For the next six weeks, our new group of Star on the city’s south and west sides, will be soaking up knowledge and learning about various careers all under the theme of storytelling.
On the first day of programming, participants from our Bronzeville and Lawndale locations gained a genuine knowledge of their peers through a “Speed Friending” icebreaker. This ideal form of networking brought an excitement that comes with entering a meaningful workplace that aims to enhance the skills and interests of many. During the summer session orientation, “stars” were given the autonomy to choose between photography or videography workshops. After two weeks, participants will swap programs. The end goal is to gain the knowledge to produce a professional package of content recaping True Star’s fifth annual From the ‘Go Fest.

Day one started at 10 am sharp. Participants split into their designated areas, and the real work began. Those of us in the photography group learned about important camera settings, such as ISO, aperture, and white balance, and understanding how too much or too little can affect the image being captured. The video students learned about camera shot techniques through visual learning and trivia games.
When asking around our Bronzeville office about what folks are most excited about this summer, you can grasp an idea of how impactful this session will be in the lives of our very own Chicago creatives. Laila Hall, an 18-year-old incoming freshman at Urbana’s University of Illinois, is beyond excited to learn more about what it’s like behind the camera. “I love producing and production. I feel being behind the camera will teach me essential knowledge.”
South Shore International College Prep student, Tyrone Washington, an incoming senior, is looking forward to the connections he can make this summers. “I’m most excited to bring my hobby and ideas to life, and show my work in a professional setting.”
It’s safe to say that what this year is bringing to the table, has True Star’s program attendees anticipating unique experiences and eagerer to learn.
